What is Off-Grid Solar?

4 min readUpdated 2026-07-15

The Basics

Off-grid solar systems operate independently of the utility grid, combining solar panels with battery storage to supply electricity around the clock.

MNRE describes off-grid solar applications broadly — including solar home lighting, solar street lighting, solar power plants and solar pumps — each sized differently for its intended use.

Where It Fits

Off-grid systems are most useful in remote locations without grid access, or in areas where the grid is present but unreliable.

System sizing accounts for the loads to be powered and the number of days of backup ('autonomy') required during low-sunlight periods.

Trade-offs

Battery storage adds upfront cost and requires periodic maintenance, with batteries typically needing replacement before the solar panels do.

Because there's no grid connection, there is no net-metering benefit — all generated energy is used or stored on-site.
